Florida is calling on county election supervisors to remove more than 53,000 dead people from the state’s voting rolls. State officials this year checked Social Security files and concluded that people who died were still registered to vote. This was the first time the state checked the files. It was allowed under a controversial election law that passed the GOP-controlled Legislature last year. An attorney with the Department of State told election supervisors on Wednesday they have seven days to remove a deceased voter from the rolls. But some supervisors want to know if they will be given more proof that the voter is dead. The move to remove dead voters comes at the same time when state officials are pushing to remove thousands non U.S.-citizens from the rolls. Miami Herald

Skechers USA Inc will pay $40million in refunds to customers in order to settle charges by the Federal Trade Commission that stated that the footwear company made unfounded claims about its Shape-ups shoes. Promoted through the use of Kim Kardashian as a brand spokesman, the shoes had promised to help people lose weight and strengthen their butt, leg and stomach muscles. The company, based in Manhattan Beach, California, will provide $40million for customer refunds in the federal case and $5million to the states. Consumers who bought the shoes will be eligible for refunds, though it’s not clear how much money people will get.  The FTC says that will depend on how many claims are received in the eight-month filing period. Most of the $40million will be returned to consumers, the commission said, and a small amount of the money will be used to administer the payouts. Mail Online

A Hollywood high school was placed on lockdown Wednesday after two teachers and 12 students developed rashes, officials said. The incident happened in a reading room in a building at McArthur High School at 6501 Hollywood Boulevard. A total of 21 students, mostly 9th and 10th graders, and one teacher were in the reading room when they began to have symptoms. A second teacher who came in to the room also got a rash. “The principal was notified that a teacher had a rash-like symptom on her arm,and then when they started to look into the situation they noticed other students had a rash like symptoms as well,” said Tracy Clark, with the Broward County Public Schools. Hollywood Fire Rescue Chief Mark Steele said a Hazmat team was brought in to the school to try to determine what caused the rashes. The incident caused the second floor of the building to be evacuated as a precaution and the classroom was quarantined, officials said. By 1 p.m., the school was given the all clear, and officials said regular dismissal would be at 2:30 p.m. Parents with questions were asked to call 754-321-3600. The two teachers and 12 students were released from the hospital. They had been transported to Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital on a county bus with an isolation unit. They had hives and were itching all over, but they were stable and didn’t have respiratory problems, authorities said. A contamination area was set up at the hospital to treat those affected. Same-sex couples in Japan may not be able to tie the knot legally, but they now can hold a commitment ceremony at one of the happiest places on earth — Tokyo Disney. It all started when 27-year-old bride Koyuki Higashi contacted Tokyo Disney Resort and inquired about marrying her partner, Hiroko, there. According to a report from AFP, a member of the resort staff told Higashi that she could absolutely marry her girlfriend at Disney. The couple visited the resort on May 5 to deliver thanks Mickey Mouse himself for welcoming them, Japanese newspaper Mainichi Daily reports. “We are a couple. We came to express our gratitude,” the pair told Mickey. On Tuesday, a company spokeswoman confirmed to AFP that gay couples are indeed able to hold wedding ceremonies at hotels inside the Tokyo Disney Resort. “We have never refused an application for a same-sex wedding at hotels here,” a spokeswoman at Milial Resort Hotels, a subsidiary of Tokyo Disney Resort told AFP. But while same-sex pairs are allowed to wed in the Japanese resort’s many hotels — including the famous fairytale-themed Cinderella Castle — they aren’t currently allowed to exchange vows in the onsite chapel “because of Christian teaching,” the Disney spokeswoman said. In the U.S., same-sex couples have been allowed to hold commitment ceremonies at Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in Southern California for years. HuffPost

Rapidamente, la frase R.I.P. E Online

Amar’e Stoudemire is officially a Cane. The New York Knicks forward has enrolled in the general studies program at the University of Miami. UM has confirmed that Stoudemire registered for summer classes. On Monday he tweeted, “Just enrolled at the University of Miami. Working on continuing my education.” He also posted a photo of himself flashing the “U” sign alongside an unidentified man in a bowtie. Stoudemire was born in Lake Wales, Florida, and graduated from Cypress Creek High School in Orlando. He bypassed college and declared for the NBA Draft straight out of high school, the Phoenix Suns selected him with the 9th overall pick in the 2002 draft. He became available for summer classes when his Knicks were eliminated from the NBA playoffs by the Miami Heat last week. UM has plenty of famous professional athletes among its former students, including Ray Lewis, Michael Irvin, Rick Barry, and Ryan Braun, but Stoudemire would become the first to attend Miami after becoming a pro jock.
