GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — Police in southern Oregon say a woman charged with robbing a bank in Grants Pass stopped to pick up her children at school on the way home. The Grants Pass Daily Courier reported a woman walked into an Umpqua Bank branch shortly after 2 p.m. Monday, handed the teller a note demanding cash, and then rode off in a car driven by a man. Police say a witness description of the car and license plates led to the home of 37-year-old Erica F. Anderson, who was arrested after returning from picking up her daughters at their elementary school. Anderson was charged with robbery and theft.

NARITA, Japan — Japanese officials kept Paris Hilton at Narita International Airport for a second day Wednesday while they decide whether she will be admitted to the country after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor drug charge in Las Vegas. The 29-year-old celebrity was stopped by immigration authorities upon her arrival in Japan on Tuesday, one day after her plea, according to an e-mailed statement by Hilton’s representative, Dawn Miller. Hilton spent the night at an airport hotel after being questioned by officials. She was scheduled to appear at a news conference in Tokyo on Wednesday to promote her fashion and fragrance lines, but that appearance was canceled. “We interviewed her yesterday and we may interview her again today. We are continuing the immigration process to determine whether she can enter Japan or not,” said Kazuo Kashihara, an immigration official at Narita. He declined to give a reason for the delay, but under Japanese law, immigration authorities are empowered to deny entry to those who have been convicted of drug-related offenses.(HuffPost)

A bizarre communication error led the Titanic to turn in the wrong direction and sail right into the massive iceberg that sunk it, resulting in more than 1,500 deaths, according to a new book. And once that blunder occurred, the captain was ordered to keep sailing, rather than wait for a rescue ship, which caused the Titanic to sink hours earlier than it had to, the book says. Louise Patten told Britain’s Guardian newspaper that her grandfather, Commander Charles Lightroller, the highest-ranking survivor of the 1912 disaster, revealed the bombshell.  He told his family, but never mentioned it to investigators because he feared it would bankrupt the White Star Line. The massive misunderstanding that caused the ship to strike the iceberg, Patten claims, occurred because there were two different steering communications systems in place. When the man at the wheel at the fateful hour, Quartermaster Robert Hitchins, heard the order to turn “hard a-starboard,” he thought it meant the opposite, and he turned left. The different systems were in place because the ship set out during the transition from sail to steam, and the mistake took place because the two relied on “complete opposite” directions, Patten said.(NYPost)

Bentley hood ornaments may injure pedestrians in a crash by failing to retract, leading the luxury carmaker to recall 596 vehicles in the U.S. The metal emblem known as the “flying B” may not fold down in a collision as intended because a mechanism may become corroded, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which posted the recall on its website. The recall covers 2007 to 2009 Arnage, Azure and Brooklands models, the safety agency said. Dealers for the Volkswagen AG brand will replace the retractable “B” mechanism free of charge, the agency said. There have been no accidents or injuries with the Bentley “B,” O’Connor said. A supplier has taken steps to prevent corrosion, adding grease to the mechanism and preventing water from collecting inside it, she said. All three recalled models have a retail price for the 2010 model year of more than $200,000, according to the website Edmunds.com.(Bloomberg)

“The mayor owns only two pairs of work shoes,” his spokesman, Stu Loeser, told The Post. “One day he’ll wear one, the next the other — and when they get worn down, he has them resoled.” The two pairs of classic black loafers — one tasseled, the other penny loafers — predate his tenure as mayor and both are so well worn, with labels so long gone, that even Hizzoner himself can’t remember what brand they are.  “He could buy any shoes he wanted, but he likes these,” Loeser said. “They are comfortable, and they work, so he says there’s no need for a new pair.” The mayor wears a 9EE, said exclusive shoe outfitter Allen Edmonds, which has sold Bloomberg several other pairs. At least one of the pairs is likely a Cole Haan, shoe experts said. The penny loafer looks like the “Dennehy,” an “old-school Italian leather [model] we specialized in for decades but discontinued” this year, said a longtime Cole Haan salesman at the chain’s Rockefeller Center branch. The shoe retails for $328. Still, the term limits of shoes can be extended only so long, said cobbler Jim Rocco, 80, owner of Jim’s Shoe Repair on East 59th Street. “A pair of shoes like that could go 18 to 20 years if you put cream on them, shine them up, resole them every eight to nine months, and depending on how much you perspire, use cedar trees on the inside,” he said. “It also depends how he walks,” Rocco said, noting that with shoes, as well as politics, longevity is helped by walking with a moderate stance to keep the heels from wearing too much on the left or right side. Quipped Rocco’s son, Joseph, “In fairness to the mayor, he does only get paid $1 a year.” According to Loeser, the mayor’s footwear frugality is in keeping with his approach to personal and governmental finance. “When he buys a cup of coffee, he makes a point of choosing the smallest size,” Loeser said. “He buys only what he wants to drink, only what he needs.”(NYPost)

(NewsCore) – Dunce U.K. teachers cheated in a bid to boost pupils’ exam results — but got the answers wrong, The Sun reported Monday. Investigators were called into one school when 18 of 19 kids gave the same incorrect answer on their external exams. An official probe found proof the pupils were illegally helped by a teacher. In a separate case, the head of another school changed papers herself — only to turn a right answer into a wrong one. Her cheating was uncovered when investigators noticed answers were altered using a different pencil. Analysis of papers from a third school found evidence of 93 changes by teachers — and when an inquiry was announced, the principal went on sick leave, then resigned. All three cases led to findings of “maladministration,” and dozens of pupils had their math, English and science test results scrapped. The unnamed schools were among five investigated by the U.K. Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. One principal was escorted off the premises after he allegedly told children the answers and interrupted exams to help pupils. U.K. students take external exams at the end of primary school. Results are important as they are used to determine schools’ comparative rankings.

BEIJING — A northern Chinese province has punished more than 300 employees caught gambling, singing karaoke or otherwise neglecting official duties during work hours. The vast majority were given warnings or demerits, although six officials whose cases were considered the most egregious were fired, a notice from the Shanxi provincial office of discipline and inspection stated Monday. Another 14 contract employees were let go, it said. Despite China’s abandonment of orthodox Marxism, tens of millions of Chinese still work for the government, including in state-run industries. Many also hold leading positions in the 78-million-member Communist Party, which maintains branches in a state businesses and government offices. Over the decades of communist rule, Chinese officials have developed a reputation for sloth, highhandedness and corruption. Many local government bureaucracies also suffer from bloat, with positions offered to the highest bidder and entire families placed on the payroll. Jobs are often guaranteed virtually for life, with only the most serious infractions leading to firing. However, recent years have seen calls for tighter discipline and better efficiency as the country’s leaders seek to change the bureaucracy’s image — and that of themselves. Officials may be periodically reassigned to boost their skill sets, while many local governments in the more prosperous east lend out leading bureaucrats to help regions in the country’s poorer west upgrade their capabilities.(FOX)
