Marc Anthony

NEW YORK (AP) – Even though he won’t be singing, Marc Anthony will making sweet music with Jada Pinkett Smith when he appears on her TNT’s series “Hawthorne.”Anthony said his character falls for Smith’s Christina, a hard-working chief nurse in a hospital. “Sparks fly. I think he has a crush on Christina and … you’re gonna have to watch it!” he said in a phone interview on Monday. Anthony plays Detective Nick Renata, a New York City cop who is investigating a kidnapping in Richmond, where “Hawthorne” is based. “I realized right there that Christina needed a man,” he said, laughing. Anthony has acted quite a bit before, even starring with wife Jennifer Lopez in the 2006 film “El cantante,” in which he portrayed legendary salsa singer Hector Lavoe.Though he’s in the middle of a tour for his Spanish album “Iconos,” Anthony said he “absolutely” wants to keep on acting. Working with Pinkett Smith, he realized how fulfilling it is for him. “I feel more capable than ever,” he said.

NEW YORK (AP) – A set of 354 narrow steps spirals all the way up to the Statue of Liberty’s crown, and it’s the only escape route for tourists in an emergency. On a recent summer day, one tourist put his hands on his knees and gasped for air as a few others funneled down the tightly twisting staircase to the statue’s pedestal. They were covered in sweat. “It was hot up there,” said Lucie Munier, visiting from France. “I think I would be scared in an emergency, but it is already pretty scary even when it is calm.”When a smoke alarm tripped inside the statue last month, hundreds of tourists were rushed down the equivalent of about 15 flights of stairs in a matter of minutes – the same ones that firefighters would need to trudge up if the 125-year-old landmark catches fire. National Park Service officials have closed the statue in recent years for a $20 million security upgrade, and kept the crown shut since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks until last year to improve its fire safety. Next year, the statue will close again, for nine months to a year, so workers can build a more up-to-date set of stairwells at Lady Liberty’s pedestal, said National Parks Service spokesman Darren Boch.

CHICAGO (AP) – If your pants are feeling a bit tight around the waistline, take note: Belly bulge can be deadly for older adults, even those who aren’t overweight or obese by other measures. One of the largest studies to examine the dangers of abdominal fat suggests men and women with the biggest waistlines have twice the risk of dying over a decade compared to those with the smallest tummies.Surprisingly, bigger waists carry a greater risk of death even for people whose weight is “normal” by the body mass index, or BMI, a standard measure based on weight and height.”Even if you haven’t had a noticeable weight gain, if you notice your waist size increasing that’s an important sign,” said lead author Eric Jacobs of the American Cancer Society, which funded the study. “It’s time to eat better and start exercising more.”Other research has linked waist size to dementia, heart disease, asthma and breast cancer.

NEW YORK (AP) – A JetBlue flight attendant got into an argument with a passenger on a jetliner arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday, cursed the passenger, grabbed a beer from the galley and then deployed an emergency exit slide and fled the plane, authorities said. Flight attendant Steven Slater was arrested at his nearby home in the Belle Harbor section of Queens by Port Authority of New York And New Jersey police on charges of criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and trespassing. Slater, 39, remained in custody Monday night. His attorney’s name wasn’t immediately available, and there was no home telephone number listed for him. JetBlue Airways Corp. said in a statement that it was working with the Federal Aviation Administration and Port Authority police to investigate the matter. It said the safety of its customers and crew members was never at risk. Slater was working on JetBlue Flight 1052 from Pittsburgh when he got into an argument with the passenger, who was pulling down baggage from an overhead bin, the Port Authority said. The luggage apparently struck the attendant in the head, and he asked for an apology, but the passenger refused, the agency said. As the plane was landing, Slater got on the public-address system and cussed at the passenger, the Port Authority said. He then grabbed at least one beer, activated the slide, slid down and went to his car, it said.Port Authority police were notified about 25 minutes later. JetBlue would not say how long Slater had been employed by the company.
