Obama-haters slam pizzeria owner on Yelp after his impromptu hug
The life cycle of Internet fame has come full circle for Florida pizza shop owner Scott Van Duzer, who was trolled and then redeemed by Yelp reviewers after his impromptu embrace of President Obama went viral this weekend. Obama stopped by Big Apple Pizza and Pasta Italian Restaurant in Fort Pierce, Fla., in part to recognize Van Duzer’s foundation, which has hosted blood drives to help patients in St. Lucie County. After Van Duzer’s bear hug of the president became a media sensation, Obama-haters took to the popular business rating website to bash his pizza shop. “There is no way I would eat the pizza from this establishment even if it was free,” were among the negative reviews — this one written by a reviewer named Derrick G. from Birmingham, Alabama. “Most of y’all Democrats can’t afford to eat at this restaurant anyway,” wrote another user named Jada J. “This restaurant doesn’t accept food stamps.” As of Tuesday morning, more than 100 reviews had been removed for violating the site’s content guidelines. “Small business is the engine of our economy. It doesn’t matter what political side you’re on,” wrote Eric H. of Los Angeles. “Kudos to Mr. Van Duzer for standing up for his own views and voting his conscience. I encourage everyone to place an order at this shop and support small business.” And in verse form, Randy W. from Mercer Island, Wash., asked Yelp reviewers to focus on the important issue — the pizza: “You may or may not like Obama,/ You may be all focused on drama,/ But when pizza you’re rating —/ Think ‘food’ and not ‘hating’!/ You should have learned that from your Momma!” NY Daily
