Starting this fall, any Provincetown, Mass., school student regardless of age will be allowed to ask for and receive a condom, even if parents object, the Cape Cod Times reports.
“The thing is, sexual activity starts younger and younger,” Peter Grosso, chairman of the health advisory committee, tells the Times. “We don’t know what age that is. So we just said, ‘We’ll make it available to all of them.’ We didn’t want to pick an age, and I really don’t believe we’re going to get first-graders asking for a condom, as a practical matter.”
The new policy was passed unanimously by the Provincetown School Committee on June 10, but began to stir up controversy this week as it became more widely known around the state.
