Donna Summer died Thursday after a battle with cancer. The 63-year-old Summer was known for her soaring voice and sensual purrs that made her a queen of disco when the genre was in its heyday in the 1970s. And it was a title she held well beyond those years. A statement from her family called Summer “a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith.” “While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy,” according to the statement released by Universal Music, her record label. “Words truly can’t express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time.”

New census estimates for 2011 highlight sweeping changes in the nation’s racial makeup, capping decades of heady immigration growth that is now slowing. According to the Tokyo Reporter, a Japanese man claiming to be an education reporter used multiple Twitter accounts in an attempt to gain the attention of  Aoi Sora, a porn star known for her lead roles in “Revenge: A Love Story,” (described by the Tokyo Times as a “psycho-sexual thriller”) as well as a film named for an amply-endowed female zombie (the title of which is totally NSFW). His daily tweet-pleas reportedly read something like this: “I am a fan of yours; please follow me,” “Please consider following,” “How’s work? Your English is getting better. Please follow me,” and, in the end, he wrote in English, “Please follow me.” Sora, who has more than 333K Twitter followers, is a bit of a Twitter siren it seems. The actress is famous in China, where Twitter is blocked. Sora is so popular that when she launched her Twitter account in April, it caused an “instant online reaction,” Chinese news blog Danwei reported. Some  questioned whether it really was Sora, and fans reportedly shared software that allowed them to access the blocked site.  That’s why the man Sora wouldn’t follow says he reached out to the actress in the first place, according to the Tokyo Reporter. Florida is calling on county election supervisors to remove more than 53,000 dead people from the state’s voting rolls. State officials this year checked Social Security files and concluded that people who died were still registered to vote. This was the first time the state checked the files. It was allowed under a controversial election law that passed the GOP-controlled Legislature last year. An attorney with the Department of State told election supervisors on Wednesday they have seven days to remove a deceased voter from the rolls. But some supervisors want to know if they will be given more proof that the voter is dead. The move to remove dead voters comes at the same time when state officials are pushing to remove thousands non U.S.-citizens from the rolls. Miami Herald
