Wikipedia prepares to black out website for 24 hours on Wednesday

Wikipedia will black out its website on Wednesday to protest anti-piracy legislation under consideration in Congress. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales announced on Twitter today the popular community-based online encyclopedia would shut down its English versions for a full 24 hours. A link to the formal announcement confirmed the decision after 1,800 Wikipedians discussed what action to take against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECTIP (PIPA). Wales said in a statement: ‘Today Wikipedians from around the world have spoken about their opposition to this destructive legislation. This is an extraordinary action for our community to take – and while we regret having to prevent the world from having access to Wikipedia for even a second, we simply cannot ignore the fact that SOPA and PIPA endanger free speech both in the United States and abroad, and set a frightening precedent of Internet censorship for the world.’ Mail Online

Divers blow holes in cruise liner

Rescue crews are today using explosives to blast holes in the side of the stricken Costa Concordia cruise ship – but hopes of finding anyone alive are fading rapidly. After officials said last night that there are 29 people still missing the death toll is expected to rise still further. This morning, reports that suggested a seventh body had been found aboard the shipwrecked liner were later denied by Italian officials. The partially-sunken liner slipped further into the sea during high winds yesterday and is now lying on its side in about 45ft of water. There are fears that the precariously-perched vessel could break completely free from its rocky ledge at any moment and plummet hundreds of feet to the bottom of the Mediterranean. There are also concerns that, if the vessel shifts even slightly, it could puncture its fuel tanks.

Kim told Kris how, where and when to propose

He proposed in a blaze of romantic glory, spelling out the words ‘will you marry me’ in red rose petals, before producing a $2 million dollar diamond ring. But now it has emerged that Kris Humphries’ televised proposal to Kim Kardashian was not all it seemed. According to Radar Online, Kris has told his inner circle of trusted friends that Kim ‘planned’ exactly how he would pop the question. ‘Kim told Kris how, where and when to propose, it was absolutely no surprise to her whatsoever,” a source close to the situation told the website. Kris apparently had wanted to propose to Kim in his home state of Minnesota, but ended up popping the question in the bedroom of her Los Angeles mansion. The proposal, which took place last May, was captured on reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, shown last September.  The insider added: ‘First of all, Kris proposed in the middle of the day, and he had to do that because it would create better lighting to capture the moment.

Rihanna puffs on Kush

Rihanna seemed extremely relaxed after puffing on a suspicious hand-rolled cigarette following a rigorous exercise session this weekend. The brown papered roll-up looked remarkably similar to a ‘blunt’, which is slang for a marijuana filled cigar. The type favoured and popularised in hip-hop music. While some people undoubtedly just smoke the cigars, Rihanna did look rather laidback as she lolled on her sunlounger. Rihanna looked blissful and deep in thought while taking a private moment for herself. The singer has been quite vocal on her Twitter page recently, telling fans how she has been enjoying her time off.  On Sunday she tweeted a message saying: ‘Kush rolled, glass full…I prefer the better things.’ The line refers to a lyric taken from Drake’s song, Up All Night, where the rapper talks about smoking marijuana. Earlier on in the week the Rihanna tweeted: ’4:20…Hi.’ The figure 4.20 is another slang term for marijuana.
