BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — John Lennon’s killer was again denied parole in New York, nearly 30 years after gunning down the ex-Beatle outside the musician’s New York City apartment building. A parole board decided not to release Mark David Chapman after interviewing him Tuesday by teleconference at Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York. It was Chapman’s sixth appearance before the board since becoming eligible for parole in 2000. He will be eligible again in 2012. Chapman, 55, had been scheduled to appear last month, but the hearing was postponed by parole officials, who said at the time they were awaiting additional information. They did not elaborate. After Tuesday’s decision, the board wrote to Chapman that it remains concerned about “the disregard you displayed for the norms of our society and the sanctity of human life when, after careful planning, you travelled to New York for the sole purpose of killing John Lennon.” The panel said “release remains inappropriate at this time and incompatible with the welfare of the community.”Among those who have opposed his release is Lennon’s now 77-year-old widow, Yoko Ono, who said last month that she believed Chapman is a potential threat to her family and perhaps himself.

NEW YORK (AP) — When Mike Tyson looks back on his friendship with Tupac Shakur, he thinks about the rapper’s big heart, explosive anger — and the one regret he has about their relationship. “He always wanted me to smoke weed with him, and I never did it, and I wish I did,” Tyson said in a recent phone interview. Tyson said he declined because he was a closet smoker and didn’t want it to get out that he smoked the drug. Now, when he looks back on the lost opportunity, he says: “That’s my biggest regret.”Tyson’s friendship with Shakur is the subject of a new documentary, “One Night in Vegas: Tyson & Tupac,” which airs Tuesday on ESPN (8 p.m. EDT). The 25-year-old rapper was shot after a Tyson fight in Las Vegas on Sept. 7, 1996; he died six days later.

Last June, his own lawyer called him “a little Mongoloid.” Yesterday, as he was sentenced to four years behind bars, the clueless crook convicted of swiping “Spider-Man” star Kirsten Dunst’s $2,000 Balenciaga handbag insisted he hasn’t gotten any smarter.”I really don’t understand the charges,” James Jimenez claimed when asked if he had anything to say on his own behalf as he was sentenced for sneaking into a 2007 movie shoot at the Soho Grand hotel and stealing Dunst’s pricey purse out of an unlocked penthouse suite. “I don’t understand why I’m being charged,” he protested.  Jimenez made no mention of the pile of video-surveillance footage, DNA evidence and eyewitness testimony that convinced a jury three months ago to convict him.(NYPost)

MIAMI (AP) Florida pastor Terry Jones will undoubtedly offend and infuriate many people around the world if he follows through on a plan to burn Muslim Qurans at his church this weekend. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution will protect him, in the same way it allows the Ku Klux Klan to burn crosses and for protesters to torch the American flag. The U.S. Supreme Court has made clear in several landmark rulings that speech deemed offensive to many people, even a majority, cannot be suppressed by the government unless it is clearly directed to intimidate someone or incite violence, legal experts said. “Are you just saying something or are you trying to incite violence? That kind of becomes the dividing line,” said Ruthann Robson, a constitutional law professor at West Virginia University. “You can speak, and express an opinion, and do it in a symbolic way by burning something, but you can’t do it in a way that would incite violence.” Jones, pastor of about 50 followers at Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, has drawn condemnation from the White House, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, the Vatican, Muslim groups, military veterans and interfaith religious organizations for his plan to burn Qurans this Saturday on the ninth anniversary of the 2001 terror attacks. Jones remains undeterred, saying he wants to dramatically emphasize his belief that the Quran is evil because it promotes violence and radicalism.

In an honor that could be misinterpreted as a slap in the face, a Los Angeles school district has named a new academy after Al Gore — the only problem is the school was built on toxic soil. The Los Angeles Times reports that crews worked up to the Labor Day weekend to try to clean up the Carson-Gore Academy of Environmental Sciences in the run-up to its Sept. 13 opening. The $75.5 million facility was named after Gore, who has made bringing awareness to climate change a personal cause since leaving office, and environmental author Rachel Carson. The former VP was never informed the school would bear his name. Wonder why. According to the Times, the soil underneath the building used to hold more than a dozen storage tanks. An environmental coalition complained that the school was an “affront” to its namesakes. Crews worked to mitigate the damage from the tanks by replacing the toxic soil with clean soil — two 3,800-square-foot plots of it. But the school is also near underground tanks from a nearby gas station, near an oil well, above an oil field and on top of contaminated groundwater. School officials, however, say those potential hazards pose no risks and that they will continue to monitor for any changes. Top school safety officer John Sterritt told the Times “there’s no doubt in my mind that the site is safe” after a $4 million cleanup.(FoxNews)

A Florida Post Office manager was forced to apologize to offended employees after she baked a cake that resembled human feces because her office received a bad score from a mystery shopper. The Cape Coral branch of the U.S. Postal Service had a “poopy day” according to employee Lucille Sacco, who said she’d never seen anything like the chocolate dessert. While the cake was baked to lighten the mood after a mystery shopper gave the office a low score for customer service, it did just the opposite, ABC News reports. Many employees thought the cake, which did not contain actual feces, was offensive and degrading to employees, who were understaffed at the time of the secret review. A formal statement was issued apologizing to Post Office employees. All poopy cakes backfire.(APP)

Los Angeles- Police beating victim Rodney King is engaged to one of the jurors who awarded him a $3.8 million settlement, RadarOnline reported Tuesday. King and Cynthia Kelley said they first felt a romantic spark when they met in a Newport Beach pizzeria the day after the controversial 1994 jury award. Both were married at the time, which complicated the blossoming relationship. They later separated when King joined the cast of VH1′s “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” after multiple arrests for being under the influence of PCP or alcohol. Four months ago, King, 44, called Kelley on a whim. “We hadn’t spoken to each other for many years, and it just so happened that we reconnected….It was like we were never apart from one another,” Kelley told Radar.”She is a godsend, a blessing in my life,” King told the website. “I don’t know what I would have done without her in my life…I can’t wait to make her my wife.” King became a national symbol of police brutality when a video camera caught a group of white cops repeatedly striking the black cab driver while he was on the ground following a high-speed chase. For now, this is all hearsay, but author Robert Randolph said this gay sex scandal is nothing new. “John Travolta has been cheating on Kelly for years!” The National Enquirer is reporting that Travolta took part in “lewd sex acts with other men” for a “sex gay spa subculture.” Travolta and Preston have been married for 19 years now and this would be a huge shock for her if it turned out to be true.
