He may be accused of sexual molestation and currently under house arrest, but that hasn’t stopped Julian Assange from appearing on one of his favourite TV shows. The silver-haired WikiLeaks founder will appear in the popular cartoon as himself for the Fox animated sitcom’s landmark 500th episode. He was reportedly sought after by Simpsons creator Matt Groening, who heard that Assange was a fan of the popular cartoon. In the episode, the Simpsons – Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and their pets – leave home and move to a rugged and isolated area where the find themselves living next to Assange, who portrays himself. Simpsons executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly that the show’s creative team realises Assange is ‘controversial,’ but that in putting together the show they avoided delving into his ‘legal situation’. Instead, the writers made sure the appearance was satirical. Assange recorded his lines remotely from an undisclosed location in Britain. The Simpsons, which has been on the air since 1989 on Fox, is the longest running primetime, scripted TV series.

Florida’s Republican voters head to the polls Tuesday as GOP favorites Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich both hope to grab some momentum with a win in the crucial Sunshine State primary. The polls in South Florida open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Voting will open with the latest polls showing former Massachusetts Governor Romney with a double-digit lead over former House Speaker Gingrich among likely Republican voters, after a week of nasty back and forth between the two frontrunners. The fight for Florida remains a four-man race, though former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum’s involvement in the Sunshine State has been somewhat limited, while Texas Rep. Ron Raul’s has been non-existent. The primary season began earlier this month with a slim victory by Santorum over Romney in the Iowa caucus, followed by a New Hampshire primary rout by Romney. But after a surprising upset in South Carolina by Gingrich, Florida has become a primary battleground, with the winner expected to take command of the GOP presidential race. With delegates at stake at the Republican National Convention scheduled for late August in Tampa, Florida is by far the largest and most crucial of the first four states to hold primaries. Florida sacrificed half of its delegates last year to be moved up on the primary calendar when it was punished for breaking Republican party rules against holding its primary before March 6. According to the Florida Department of Elections, there are 4,063,853 registered Republicans in the state. As of Monday, 531,318 absentee ballots had been requested and some 338,753 had been returned. Between absentees and early voting, 632,513 total votes had already been cast. NBC
