Miami jail ‘overrun with strippers posing as paralegals’ for wealthy South American drug lords

Miami’s maximum security jail is allegedly being overrun by strippers posing as paralegals for wealthy drug lords. Lawyers claim Miami’s Federal Detention Center’s visitor rooms have been taken over by South American pole dancers, according to the Miami New Times. Attorneys hired by the accused kingpins allegedly list the scantily clad women as ‘legal assistants’ which gets them access into the jail. Meanwhile, attorneys who refuse to go along with the scam risk losing their clients to those who are. ‘They take off their tops and let the guys touch them,’ veteran defence attorney Hugo Rodriguez told Miami New Times blog Riptide. ‘The majority of these young, very attractive women are non-citizens brought in exclusively for the purposes of visiting the FDC. ‘Any lawyer can sign a form and designate a legal assistant. There is no way of verifying it. The process is being abused.’ However, the accusations are difficult to prove. An FDC spokeswoman declined to comment, and prison officials refused Riptide’s requests for any incident reports on fake paralegals being thrown out of the facility. But attorneys insist the scam is ongoing. Miami New Times

Man who shot Ronald Reagan could be freed

A federal judge will begin eight days of hearings on Wednesday on whether John Hinckley Jr., the man who shot Ronald Reagan, should eventually be released from mental hospital. Hinckley has been a patient at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, since his 1982 trial ended in a jury verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. Doctors have petitioned the court for approval to grant Hinckley convalescent leave if a series of extended visits to his mother’s home prove to be successful, CNN reports. In the last court hearing two years ago, U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman acknowledged testimony that his mental problems were in remission and the 56-year-old has gradually enjoyed greater freedoms over the years. The government believes Hinckley is ‘a man capable of great violence’ and that there are fears ‘that this violence may be repeated.’ Hinckley has been allowed several visits in recent years to his mother, JoAnn, who is now 85 and in good health. She lives in a gated development in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Bronx graffiti artists plan to sue JLo

JLo’s Fiat advert has come under-fire once again after a mural by an established graffiti group was pictured without their permission. Six seconds into the minute-long commercial, the Fiat glides past an ‘I Heart The Bronx’ mural, which exists underneath the 6 train station in Parkchester. But the artists behind the eye-catching image, the TATS Cru, claim it was used illegally as it is subject to copyright law and they were not consulted. The ‘My World’ advert, in which the star professes her love for her home-town, has already come under heavy criticism after it emerged that she did not even set foot in the Bronx for filming. The 42-year-old was filmed inside the tiny Fiat 500 pretending to drink in the sights of her hometown.  When in actual fact she never left the West Coast and instead used a body double and shot most of the scenes in LA.

240,000 Americans with HIV aren’t seeking any treatment because they don’t know they’re infected

Americans aren’t seeking treatment for HIV – but that’s because around 20 per cent of those infected aren’t even aware they have the virus, as people can have an infection for years without developing symptoms. Of the nearly 1.2million people with HIV, about 20 per cent don’t know they’re infected, a new federal report revealed. There’s also a worrisome gap between those who are diagnosed and those who get in – and stay in – treatment, some experts said. They added that not nearly enough people get tested for the infection. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention found only a small fraction of people are being successfully treated. Mail Online

Man sues Playboy after he paid to get into iconic mansion while women walked in for free

A guest at a recent Playboy mansion benefit was shocked to learn that the venue favours attractive women – and now he’s suing for equal treatment. Steve Frye claims he paid $1,000 to attend the Leather Meets Lace party, but watched while scantily-clad women got in for free. Frye claims there’s a double standard at the mansion, and that allowing women easy entry ‘promotes harmful, negative stereotypes.’ The suit, filed in California Central Court, also claims that Playboy is in violation of state’s Gender Tax Repeal Act of 1995.

Radiation from WiFi connections can nuke sperm, say scientists

Using a laptop wirelessly connected to the internet can harm a man’s fertility, researchers have warned. They discovered that WiFi radiation can ‘nuke’ sperm – meaning the risk arises when the machine is used as it was designed and placed on the lap. When the wireless connection is switched on it creates electromagnetic radiation that damages semen, the scientists said. The Argentinian researchers made the connection after taking semen samples from 29 healthy men, placing a few drops under a laptop hooked into the internet via WiFi and hitting download. Four hours later some of the sperm appeared to have been nuked by WiFi radiation. A quarter of the sperm were no longer swimming around, compared with just 14 per cent from semen samples stored at the same temperature away from the computer. And 9 per cent of the sperm showed DNA damage, three-fold more than the comparison samples. Mail Online

American Airlines files for bankruptcy

American Airlines’ parent company, AMR Corp., announced Tuesday that it has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. AMR said American Airlines, American Eagle and all other subsidiaries will honor all tickets and reservations and operate normal flight schedules during the bankruptcy filing process, using its $4.1 billion in cash. The airline also announced that Gerard Arpey, its chairman and CEO, is retiring. He is being succeeded by Thomas Horton, who was named president of the company in July 2010. In an interview with CNN Tuesday after the filing, Horton insisted that American customers should see “business as usual” in spite of the bankruptcy. But he said that the cost disadvantage for American compared to other major U.S. carriers that have already gone though bankruptcies of their own since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks left it no choice. Norway Monster Declared Insane

Forensic psychiatrists have determined that the right-wing extremist who killed 77 people in Norway last July is insane, and therefore can not be sentenced to prison. Anders Behring Breivik can, however, be sent to a mental hospital for life. Psychiatrist Torgeir Husby told The Associated Press that the reached a “clear conclusion” about Breivik’s mental health. In July, the head of the same panel said it was unlikely the 32-year-old Norwegian would be declared legally insane because his plan to massacre teens at a political youth camp and bomb a government building was so carefully planned and executed.
