Are hot dogs as bad for you as cigarettes?

They’re as American as apple pie – you’ll find them at virtually every cook-out in the land and every sporting event. But now a medical group in Washington D.C. is taking aim at the gold old hot dog. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has just unveiled a billboard in Indianapolis with a picture of hot dogs in a cigarette pack. The message reads: ‘Warning: Hot dogs can wreck your health.’ The group is trying to create awareness of a link between hot dogs and colorectal cancer. The 2007 study they cite by the World Cancer Research Fund found that one 50 gram serving of processed meat a day, about the same amount in one hot dog, increases the risk of colorectal cancer by about 21 per cent. Hot dogs should come with a ‘warning label that helps consumers understand the health risk,’ Susan Levin, the committee’s nutrition education director told USA Today, similar to warning labels on cigarettes. Not all health experts agree, naturally. ‘It is not necessary to eliminate consumption of red or processed meat; rather the message is that these foods should not be the mainstay of your diet,’ states the guidelines of the American Cancer Society. 84yr old Florida mayor claims marijuana found in her backyard was planted by a nemesis

Mayor Mary Lee Cook of Oak Hill, Florida, claims that the marijuana plants narcotics agents found growing near a fence in her yard were placed there by someone looking to damage her reputation. Two weeks ago, narcotics agents from the sheriff’s department asked to search the mayor’s home, having been informed that she was growing marijuana.  The 84-year-old mayor says that the agents found and seized a few ‘scrawny’ marijuana plants in individual containers. The sheriff’s office report notes that 10 marijuana plants in total were discovered. A spokesman from the sheriff’s department says that Mayor Cook has not been charged and that investigators do not believe she was aware of the drugs on her property.

Police warn elderly people about scammers pretending to sell prescriptions over the phone

Police on Wednesday warned elderly people to be cautious about scammers who may be pretending to sell prescriptions over the phone to them. Det. Carl Zogby of the Hialeah Police Department said scammers pretend to sell everything from colon cleanser to cucumber gel. “They tell them they’re calling from their doctor’s office. They drop the name of the doctor  because they have a little bit of information on you , and they say you need some life saving medications,” Zogby said. It turns out they aren’t selling prescription medications at all, but rather over-the-counter vitamins and supplements that cost just a few dollars, he said. The victim is usually charged several hundred dollars for them, Zogby said. NBC Miami

Rick Sanchez Back in Miami to Call FIU Games

The controversial former local news anchor with a flair for the overdramatic that landed him on CNN is reportedly lending his voice to Florida International University football games this fall. FIU’s athletic department confirmed Sanchez will be in the radio booth during games this season, but did not release how much he will be paid or for how long he will call games. Sanchez was fired by CNN in October after some controversial comments he made about The Daily Show host Jon Stewart and his employer. But FIU hasn’t let controversy stop it from hiring a big name with equally large baggage in the name of ratings. Now Sanchez is back in the pond he started at, swimming with the likes of other former big fish like Isiah Thomas. NBC Miami

Cancer hospital employee embezzled $1.5 MILLION by stealing toner and reselling it

A former hospital worker is facing jail after embezzling $1.5m from his employer by ordering, stealing and reselling printer toner. Marque Gumbs ordered the office supplies while working at New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, but sold the toner on to help fund his luxury lifestyle. The receiving clerk would order unneeded printer toner on the hospital’s bill before meeting the supplier on the street, reselling the product and pocketing the cash. While carrying out the scheme, Gumbs, 33, bought a 2011 BMW, a diamond-encrusted Rolex watch and Vuitton bags. He also lived in a luxury £2,250-a-month condo in New York’s Trump Tower while carrying out the elaborate three-year scam and regularly took holidays to Las Vegas and the Caribbean. Prosecutors said Gumbs ordered over $1.5m of printer toner between September 2007 and August 2010 while employed as a low-level receiving clerk. He carried out the scam while earning just $37,800-a-year at the hospital, and would often order toner cartridges which didn’t even work on the hospital campus machines. Gumbs faces up to seven-and-a-half years jail after admitting grand larceny yesterday at Manhattan Supreme Court. Mail Online

Lifelike Casey Anthony mask sparks $2k bidding war on eBay

As far as Halloween costumes go, this is certainly a topical one. An extraordinarily lifelike mask of Casey Anthony’s face has gone on sale on eBay, sparking a furious bidding war.  Disturbingly, almost 80 people have already bid for the item, which looks remarkably like the young mother from Florida who was earlier this month dramatically acquitted of charges that she murdered her two-year-old daughter Caylee. At the time of writing, 77 bidders have tried to purchase the latex mask and the highest bid is $1,825. Daily Mail

Justin Bieber and dad’s matching Hebrew tattoos

Justin Bieber and his father pose topless, showing off their matching tattoos. A newly-released photo shows the father and son in Israel earlier this year where they had the etching done together. The pair had the word ‘Yeshua,’ which means Joshua in Hebrew, etched onto the left side of their torsos. Bieber first showed off the etching when he went on a Hawaii break with girlfriend Selena Gomez in May. It came as Justin’s second tat, with the teen seemingly sharing his father’s love of the ink. The Baby singer also has an etching of seagull on his left hip, which he had done to celebrate turning 16.
