The Florida Senate has approved a trio of guns bills that expand citizens’ guns rights. All were approved along party-line votes on Thursday. One decriminalizes the accidental showing of a concealed weapon. A person with a concealed weapon permit now could be charged with a third-degree misdemeanor for inadvertently showing his or her weapon. Another measure restricts doctors asking patients about gun ownership. A group of pediatricians had opposed that bill because they said it would interfere with patient care. The third bill prohibits municipalities from passing stricter gun laws than the state. Read more: NBC Miami
It wasn’t exactly the most inconspicuous disguise he could have chosen – but perhaps he was trying to get into character. Bewildered security guards watched on CCTV as a man dressed in a full cow suit crawled into a Virginia Walmart store on all fours and stole 96 gallons of milk. He loaded it into a cart, pushed it outside and started trying to give it away to bewildered customers. But when police caught up with the four-legged Robin Hood, he hot-hoofed it down the road – to a nearby McDonald’s. An 18-year-old man, Jonathan Payton, has been arrested for shoplifting after police allegedly found him sitting in the restaurant parking lot with the offending suit next to him in the car.
A Florida motorist has been arrested after apparently attempting to escape a speeding ticket by making a false 911 call. Jonathan Paul Rorech was caught driving at 45mph in a 30mph zone and was about to be handed a ticket when he allegedly made the false call to divert the approaching police officer. The driver was pulled over at 1am on Monday in Naples, Florida, by a Sheriff’s deputy, and claimed he had left his driving licence at home. When the officer returned to his vehicle to run his details through a computer, Rorech allegedly reported a shooting in the area with a victim on the floor. Deputies were given a report of a shooting with ‘one subject on the ground’ at South Street Bar & Grill in North Naples. When police arrived at the fake shooting and found no sign of trouble, officers became suspicious and allegedly traced the 911 call back to Rorech. The officer who pulled Rorech over drove to his home and waited outside until he returned home at 2.25am. Police then promplty arrested the motorist on suspicion of making the false 911 call and two counts of driving under a suspended licence – once while speeding and once on the way home. Six astronauts have said their goodbyes to their families and are ready to take space shuttle Endeavour on its final flight Friday as hundreds of thousands gather along Florida’s Space Coast to cheer the spectacle. Liftoff was set for almost 10 hours after another spectacle was beginning in Britain — the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The shuttle’s huge fuel tank was scheduled for a fill-up at about the same hour they were to exchange vows. Endeavour weathered a strong thunderstorm Thursday night that dropped hail on a neighboring town and delayed late launch preparations. But that was not expected to interfere with the Friday launch set for 3:47 p.m. Meteorologists predicted a 70 percent chance of good enough weather at liftoff. VIPs watching Endeavour include President Barack Obama and his family — only the third time a president has witnessed a space launch and the first time a first family has attended one — and so many members of Congress that it’s practically a quorum. After months of waiting, William and Kate finally tied the knot at Westminster Abbey today. Wearing a flowing wedding dress with a long train and lace sleeves, Kate clutched a bunch of white flowers as she embarked on the short drive to Westminster Abbey, before starting her three-minute walk up the aisle to be with her groom. After the couple marry at Westminster Abbey they will travel to the Palace in an open-topped carriage despite forecasters saying there is a risk of rain. Read more: Daily Mail
A team of Swiss adventurers are preparing their solar-powered plane for its first international flight next month. The Solar Impulse team says the flights to Belgium and France are a big challenge because the plane will need to navigate across international air traffic networks. The single-seater prototype with the wingspan of a Boeing 777 made its 2009 maiden flight in Switzerland and further tests have all taken place there. Pilot Andre Borschberg said Thursday the success of the first cross-border flights depends on the team receiving authorization from national authorities. The team says it will ready the plane from May 2 and take off to Brussels when weather conditions are right. The plane is expected at the 49th International Paris Air Show from June 20-26. Mark Wahlberg has a serious case of Bieber Fever. The Oscar-nominee, who most recently produced and starred in “The Fighter,” told New York Magazine that he’s in the process of putting together a movie with teen pop sensation Justin Bieber. “We’re putting it together. Yeah, we’re doing it at Paramount,” Wahlberg said. “We pitched them the idea, and we talked to him about doing it and he loved the idea. Been sending me video — he sent me a video of himself and yeah, I think he’s really talented.” While he didn’t confirm that he would star — Wahlberg has produced a number of projects without a starring role — he did say that neither he or Bieber would sing. Injecting himself in there seems to hint that he’ll co-star in what he describes as a story about “a reluctant mentor in an inner-city environment.” Read more: HuffPost
