Why sleeping with the light on could make you depressed

Sleeping with the light on could leave you in a dark mood the next day, scientists have warned. They say that night light – however dim – may affect the structure of the brain, raising the odds of depression. The eerie glow emitted by a TV or the seemingly reassuring presence of a night light, could be enough to impact on mental health. The warning, presented at a leading American conference, is the latest in a long line about the potential dangers of disrupting the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. There are concerns that shift workers are at higher risk of breast cancer and, only last month, a study linked night time light with weight gain. With complete darkness being hard to achieve in the modern world, the researchers say the findings could have serious implications for health. In the latest study, researchers from Ohio State University, looked at the effect of exposing rodents to dim light in the eight hours or so they would usually be asleep. At the equivalent of having a television on in a darkened room, the lamp used was not bright, but it was enough to affect the animals’ behaviour, the Society for Neuroscience’s annual conference heard. One depression test measured how much sugared water the creatures mice drank, with a lack of interest in the sweet treat signalling a change in mood. Overall, those exposed to the dim light at night showed more symptoms of depression compared to the hamsters in the standard light-dark cycle. Perfect for those tight parking spaces: A £10k miniature replica E-Type Jaguar and Porsche Speedster… with top speeds of 46mph

These £10,000 miniature replicas of a Jaguar E-Type and a Porsche Speedster are perfect for squeezing into the tightest of parking spaces – and can still reach pretty impressive top speeds of 46 miles per hour. The tiny cars, which are half the size of the original, took over 450 hours to make and come with a 110cc petrol engine or an electric motor. Engineering firm Pocket Classics also makes ‘tribute’ versions of the Mercedes 300SL, Willys Jeep and Bugatti Type-35. A full size Bugatti would cost up to £1.5 million and the others could set you back £200,000 each but these handmade miniatures are priced between £6,995 and £9,995. Their makers claim they are designed to be the ‘best toy in the world’ and, at 7ft 6ins long and 3ft wide, they are just big enough for an adult to drive. The replicas are fully serviceable and most come with working lights, horn, indicators, adjustable seats and disc brakes.(MailOnline)

“Better Days Are Ahead” for Miami

The Miami Hurricanes need a coach, but whether ESPN analyst and Super Bowl-winning coach Jon Gruden will fill the spot remains to be seen. A report from Sports Journey Broadcast Network’s Lake Lewis early Sunday had the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach joining Miami for $3 million per year, but by late Sunday night, Fanhouse was reporting that a close friend of Gruden’s was calling the report “ridiculous.” The Sun-Sentinel reported Sunday that Gruden wants the job and had “initiated contact” with UM, and later the AP reported that Gruden had received “parameters” of an offer from the school. Gruden, who will be working the Cardinals-49ers game tonight for ESPN, released a statement through the network Sunday. “I am committed to Monday Night Football and to ESPN,” Gruden said in the statement. “I enjoy working with Mike, Jaws and our entire crew and am just trying to get better at this job.” Head coach Randy Shannon was fired Saturday night following Miami’s heartbreaking 23-20 overtime loss to South Florida. The loss dropped the Canes to 7-5.”I am proud of the last four years at the University of Miami and what we have been able to accomplish,” Shannon said in a statement. “I have a deep respect and appreciation for the young men who have played here during my tenure.” UM athletic director said dropping Shannon was a tough decision but it had to be made. ”Better days are ahead. Great days are ahead for this program,” Hocutt said.

Keys, Lady Gaga to sign off Twitter for charity

Alicia Keys and Lady Gaga take charity work seriously, and they’re going offline to prove it. Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Usher and other celebrities have joined a new campaign called Digital Life Sacrifice on behalf of Keys’ charity, Keep a Child Alive. The entertainers plan to sign off of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter on Wednesday, which is World AIDS Day. The participants will sign back on when the charity raises $1 million. ”It’s really important and super-cool to use mediums that we naturally are on,” Keys said in a phone interview from New York last week. For the campaign – which also includes Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Seacrest, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Elijah Wood, Serena Williams, Janelle Monae and Keys’ husband, Swizz Beatz – celebrities have filmed “last tweet and testament” videos and will appear in ads showing them lying in coffins to represent what the campaign calls their digital deaths. ”It’s so important to shock you to the point of waking up,” Keys said. “It’s not that people don’t care or it’s not that people don’t want to do something, it’s that they never thought of it quite like that.” The campaign, she said, puts the disease in perspective. ”This is such a direct and instantly emotional way and a little sarcastic, you know, of a way to get people to pay attention,” said Keys, who has more than 2.6 million followers on Twitter. The foundation, which began in 2003, will accept donations through text messages and bar-code technology, which is featured in the charity’s Buy Life campaign. Raised efforts support families affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.(AP)
