French police secure the perimeter during a bomb alert at the Eiffel Tower

French police secure the perimeter during a bomb alert at the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Tuesday during the second bomb alert in a two week period. Intelligence officials are examining whether alleged terror plots targeting European cities have any links to the U.S., according to a report.  The Eiffel Tower was briefly evacuated Tuesday evening after officials received a bomb threat called in from a telephone booth. It was the second such alert at the monument in two weeks. Bomb experts combed through the 1,063-foot tower and found nothing unusual, police said. Tourists were let back inside about two hours after the structure was emptied. The warning came as French officials were put on alert for possible terror attacks. British officials, too, have been aware of a possible attack but the country’s terror threat warning has not changed from “severe” — the second highest level in the five-tier system.

Carter checked at hospital after falling ill

CLEVELAND — Former President Jimmy Carter, on a trip promoting his new book, developed an upset stomach on a flight to Cleveland on Tuesday and was staying at a hospital overnight at his doctor’s recommendation. Carter’s grandson, Georgia state Sen. Jason Carter, said his 85-year-old grandfather was doing fine.”He’s definitely resting comfortably and expected to continue his book tour this week,” Jason Carter said. “I haven’t talked to him, but nobody in the family is concerned.” The former president planned to stay the night at MetroHealth hospital in Cleveland, according to a statement from the Carter Center, an Atlanta-based nonprofit known for its international work on human rights and public health. He planned to resume his book tour Wednesday in Washington D.C. “He is fully alert and participating in all decision-making related to his care,” hospital spokeswoman Christina Karas said. “The decision to admit him overnight is purely precautionary.” Carter was a passenger on a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Cleveland when he became ill. A Carter Center official told NBC News that Carter became airsick and vomited. ” While on a flight to Cleveland, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter developed an upset stomach, and, upon arrival, was taken to Metro Health Hospital for observation,” according to a statement from the center. “He is resting comfortably and is expected to resume his book tour this week.” After the plane landed, he was taken off by rescue crews, said Jackie Mayo, a spokeswoman at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. He was wheeled into an emergency room at MetroHealth on a stretcher and later was up and walking around, said Mary Atkins, who had taken her daughter to the hospital for medical treatment and saw Carter from a nearby room.(MSN)

Nick Cannon wants help paying for his birthday

Nick Cannon is looking to make a killing on his 30th birthday — reps for Mariah Carey‘s husband have sent out a mass e-mail looking for corporate sponsors to pay $25,000 for three tweets from next month’s bicoastal bash. Announcing that “confirmed” guests will include Mariah as host, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Will and Jada Smith, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, Kobe Bryant, Quincy Jones, L.A. Reid and Jamie Foxx, Cannon is searching for sponsors for a New York party Oct. 8 and an LA bash at Universal Studios Oct. 9. In an e-mail sent wide, reps for the NBC “America’s Got Talent” host say: “This is an extremely exciting opportunity to sponsor a fun and lavish event . . . opportunities range from gift bags and signage to tweets and photo ops.” A one-sheet flier for the “Nick Cannon Birthday celebration hosted by Mariah Carey” offers sponsors the chance to pay $2,500 to be in the gift bag, while a $15,000 donation includes “one tweet” and “mention in all p.r. materials.” For $25,000 you can be a “host sponsor” which includes “three tweets,” a “right to service out photos” and a “logo on all collateral,” which we hope doesn’t refer to the “confirmed” celebrity guests. And those prices only refer to a single city, with special “packages” that can be created for both New York and LA. Cannon, who married Carey in 2008, really doesn’t need the cash. He’s in his second year of hosting the NBC talent show, while Mariah’s wealth was estimated at $400 million this year.(NYPost)

Another Ramsay TV chef suicide

A New Jersey restaurateur once featured on Gordon Ramsay’s “Kitchen Nightmares” — and told by the TV chef that his debt-ridden eatery was “about to swim down the Hudson” — was eerily found floating in the river after jumping off the George Washington Bridge. Joseph Cerniglia, the 39-year-old owner of Campania in Fair Lawn, is the second chef to commit suicide after appearing on one of Ramsay’s high-heat, reality-cooking series. Cerniglia — once the executive chef at Manhattan’s famed Gallagher’s Steak House — had been deeply in debt when his Italian eatery was featured in the first season of “Kitchen Nightmares” in 2007. “Why did you become a chef-owner if you haven’t a clue how to run a business?” Ramsay railed at Cerniglia. Cerniglia conceded that “Campania definitely has its share of problems, big problems.”He noted that the once-popular restaurant had fallen into desperate straits. “I’m financially in trouble — the debt of the restaurant alone is overwhelming. My personal debt — wife, kids mortgage — that’s a lot of debt,” he moaned on the show. A spokeswoman for Ramsay said he was on a plane last night and not immediately available for comment. The first person to star in a Ramsay show and then kill herself was chef Rachel Brown. Brown, 41, competed on Ramsay’s “Hell’s Kitchen” — a series pitting aspiring chefs against each other — in 2006. She had been eliminated on the fifth episode, but returned to the series for the finale to help chef Heather West nab the top prize. Brown shot herself to death in her family’s Dallas home a year later.(NYPost)

Segway company owner rides two-wheeler off cliff

The multi-millionaire businessman, 62, fell into the River Wharfe while inspecting the grounds of his North Yorkshire estate on a rugged country version of the Segway. The Segway is a motorised scooter which use gyroscopes to remain upright and is controlled by the direction in which the rider leans. A passer-by found Heselden alongside his Segway in the Boston Spa area at about 11.40am on Sunday. A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said today: “Police were called at 11.40am yesterday to reports of a man in the River Wharfe, apparently having fallen from the cliffs above. “A Segway-style vehicle was recovered. He was pronounced dead at the scene. “At this time we do not believe the death to be suspicious.” Heselden was worth £166m and ranked 395th on the Sunday Times Rich List. The former miner made his millions from defence contracts. He created a unique portable wire cage water containment system which when filled with earth and sand proved a major defence against bullets, missiles and suicide attacks. His founded his first company HESCO Bastions with his redundancy pay when he was laid off from the mines. The wire cage systems developed by Bastions have become standard military equipment for Nato as well as American and British forces. The Segway operation was acquired by a UK based company backed by Heselden.(Telegraph)

Wyclef Jean Hospitalized, Suffering From Stress

NEW YORK — A representative for hip-hop singer Wyclef Jean says he has been hospitalized at an undisclosed location. The 37-year-old Grammy Award winner checked into a hospital over the weekend. His representative Marian Salzman says he’s “suffering from stress and fatigue based on the grueling eight weeks he’s had.” Jean announced a bid for Haiti’s presidency in August but ended it last week. No official reasons were given for Jean’s exclusion although he’s presumed not to have met constitutional requirements, including living in Haiti. Jean was born on the outskirts of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. He grew up in New York and lives in New Jersey. His rep says he “plans to take it easy” and will be released from the hospital this week. Jean also is planning to release a new album.(HuffPost)
