Judge blocks parts of Arizona immigration law

PHOENIX (AP) – A federal judge stepped into the fight over Arizona’s immigration law at the last minute Wednesday, blocking the heart of the measure and defusing a confrontation between police and thousands of activists that had been building for months. Coming just hours before the law was to take effect, the ruling isn’t the end. It sets up a lengthy legal battle that could end up before the Supreme Court – ensuring that a law that reignited the immigration debate, inspired similar measures nationwide, created fodder for political campaigns and raised tensions with Mexico will stay in the spotlight. Protesters who gathered at the state Capitol and outside the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City cheered when they heard the news. The governor, the law’s authors and anti-illegal immigration groups vowed to fight on.

Florida great-grandma takes a bite out of crime

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – A great-grandmother in Daytona Beach bit an assailant and was dragged several feet hanging on to the getaway car of a couple who snatched her purse. Patricia Robertson doesn’t know how she summoned the strength, but the commotion she created helped get her belongings back.Police said the 73-year-old was accosted at a gas station over the weekend by a man and woman who grabbed her purse and tried to speed off. On instinct, Robertson said she bit the man hard enough to draw blood and hung on to their truck when that failed. A bystander who saw the attack called 911 and followed the assailants, updating police until they could apprehend the couple. Robertson said she’s sore and almost lost a tooth, but thankful for the good Samaritan’s help.

What’s Jay-Z’s state of mind over spoof?

LONDON (AP) – An online parody of a Jay-Z hit that swaps New York’s metropolis for a modest Welsh port town has won hundreds of thousands of fans, the director of the spoof said Wednesday. The video “Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind),” a comic tribute to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ 2009 single “Empire State of Mind,” has been viewed more than 1.65 million times on You Tube and drawn praise for its witty lyrics. Ymerodraeth is the Welsh word for empire. Morgan Jane Delaney, a 24-year-old filmmaker, shot a near frame-by-frame recreation of the original music video, but in the less glamorous surroundings of the south Wales city – about 140 miles (220 kilometer) west of London. She said the concept began as a private joke with her boyfriend and their comedian friend, but soon snowballed into a film project.”We just started singing different place names instead of New York, just as a joke, and we thought that Newport was funny. I don’t really know why I decided to go the whole hog and make a film of it, but it just seemed like fun,” the director said.

Wedding photographer in Italy shot dead after asking bride, groom to pose with guns

London’s The Daily Express said Calogero Scimea, 45, had stepped in at the last minute after the couple’s official photographer fell ill. He was shot in the head as former teenage sweethearts Valentina Anitra, 22, and Ignazio Licodia, 25, were having their photographs taken at the groom’s parents’ home in Sicily ahead of the wedding. Following the accident, which occurred over the weekend, the couple called off the wedding ceremony.”From what we have been able to establish, the photographer asked the parents of the bride and groom if they had any guns to use as props in a picture,” Palermo police spokesman Colonel Teo Luzi said.”One went off, hitting him in the head, killing him. We are trying to establish if the gun went off as it was being handled by the photographer. “The firearms were legally held but they should all be kept safe and not be handled by people who are not used to them and have no experience.”Police were continuing to investigate the incident today and said the groom’s parents could be prosecuted as the death occurred on their property. In southern Italy, and especially on the isle of Sicily, it is traditional for guns to be fired at special family events and also festivals.

After Years of Searching, Ryan Kramer Finds Sperm-Donor Father, Six Half-Siblings. Ryan Kramer is not a typical 20 year old. He graduated from high school at 14, has already earned a master’s degree in engineering and will start working this fall at NASA as a rocket scientist. But growing up with an incredible intellect wasn’t the only thing that made him different from other kids.”I was told I was donor-conceived at a very young age … as I got older I became more curious about that half of my DNA,” Kramer of Nederland, Colo., said. With mom Wendy’s approval, Kramer set off on a mission to find his sperm-donor dad.”I didn’t need a father … what I wanted was to just see a picture of him or have a conversation,” he said, adding that he was looking for answers more than anything else.An estimated 35,000 to 60,000 babies of sperm donors are born every year, and a growing number of the children want to meet not only their donor fathers but also their half-brothers and -sisters.

It’s Official! Cheerleading Is NOT a Sport!

Hey cheerleaders! Bad news! you do may be great — but it ain’t a sport! That’s official now after a judge in Hartford, Connecticut ruled that competitive cheerleading is not an official sport and ordered that Quinnipiac University will not be able use the activity to meet gender-equality requirements. Federal judge Stefan Underhill said competitive cheerleading is too underdeveloped to be considered a sport under Title IX. The ruling came on the heels of a lawsuit that was filed against Quinnipiac by volleyball players after the sport was shelved for budgetary reasons. Quinnipiac replaced the volleyball team with competitive cheerleading in order to adhere to a 1972 federal law that states that there needs to be equality in opportunities for men and women in athletics. School officials discussed creating a women’s rugby team after the ruling was announced. Or how about just bring back the volleyball team you idiots??! “A is for apple, D is for duck! Hey Judge Underhill, you really, really suck! Gooooo Team!” (AHN News)
